Watch parties! We’ve attended a few virtual watch parties and they are fun. There are several coming up this weekend and next.

A Blumhouse watch party event in association with Fangoria and for those with Amazon Prime Video on Saturday and Sunday including a Q&A with directors following the viewing.

Weekend #40 of 53 (10/1 – 10/4/2020) for 2020 Picks By Streaming Service

We all know these are unprecedented times right now. Earlier in the comments area we were having a discussion about the theatrical window. It’s such a polarizing topic with the big three theater chains and it’s stupid.

You can just click on the tag theatrical window and see all kinds of past posts on the topic. I’ve been heavily in favor of reducing the theatrical window and in some cases eliminating it altogether. Not for the big budget movies like Tenet, but for independent films, smaller to medium-sized budget films and streaming tie-in films. Keep reading what I mean by streaming tie-ins.

Hulu (TV): October 2

Meanwhile, we have Netflix chugging along during the pandemic releasing more new movies, more content than these mega million, er billion, dollar theater chains every single week. In some cases every few days. Netflix looks absolutely genius for investing so heavily in new content. They have been doing it not because they predicted the pandemic, but because they feared the day when there were no movies from studios they could license any more because the studios have their own competing streaming services. Here we are in 2020 and a lot of them have.

Back to the anemic number of movies by comparison being released theatrically right now. Sure, it might not make sense for some movies to release domestically with only 70% of theaters reopened and moviegoer confidence shaken over safety in some (many?) areas, but having a screen that can show movies that only/primarily shows classic movies isn’t going to drive moviegoers to the theater. They need more new movies.

How can they get them?

The answer is obvious. We write about and share new movies coming out every Thursday here. There are plenty to choose from to show in theaters. Plenty. Why aren’t theaters interested?

Is it ego? They think if they show a bunch of non-theatrical release movies in their theaters it will diminish the overall theater experience? That if they break their long standing rules about day and date releases, it will forever tarnish the business cycle?

We’re in a pandemic. There are no established movie theater rules that apply to this new situation. So, make up the rules that benefit your customers — moviegoers, us — and when the pandemic is over, you can go back to some pre-pandemic rules. Maybe you won’t want to? Maybe the new rules you create will be even better for your business.

Your product is movies. It’s like a hamburger stand that doesn’t sell hamburgers. You need new movies coming into your theaters every week.

Why haven’t the theater chains gone to studios and Netflix and other streamers and asked to screen their new movies until this pandemic is over? Let people see these movies in theaters that want to see them on the big screen. Maybe it doesn’t work for every single movie, but certainly this is better than showing a bunch of classic movies for $5, yes/no? Why is the stupid “respect for the theatrical window” the battle cry for the big three theaters?

They won’t listen to me. I’m just a spec of dust somewhere in a vast internet desert, but business survival 101 means being open to other creative visions, plans and ideas. Since these are unprecedented times, the movie theaters need to treat them accordingly and do things differently.

Maybe just possibly someday some movie theater owner will read this and say, “you know what, we should have tried something like this.”

We can always dream

Since we won’t be seeing any of the movies and TV shows below on the big screen (at least in the near future), we’ll have to continue to enjoy from the comfort of our homes, offices, computers, etc. My oh my, it’s quite the selection of new and classic content to watch.

As a final incidental note, October is my favorite entertainment

HBO Max Movies

  1. Beavis & Butthead Do America
  2. *Downhill ⭐️½

HBO is starting out the month with their weekly new theatrical release movie with two horrible films. Since October is a notoriously spooky month, this seems timely. Sometimes it’s worth watching these films to see if they’re so bad, they’re good. Downhill is a lifeless, cold comedy with Will Ferrell and next week the worst film we’ve seen in quite time, Cats. Neither is recommended viewing, but maybe one or both work for you.

FIRST LOOK: The Lie – Amazon Prime Video

Parents protecting their children is an innate trait, but how far can this be taken? How far would you go to protect the actions of your child? A parental psychological thriller, if you will.

A remake of a 2015 German film titled We Monsters, the film stars Joey King (The Kissing Booth 2, The Act) as a teen girl who confesses to killing her best friend. Her parents, played by Mireille Enos (The Killing) and Peter Sarsgaard (An Education), decide to help cover up the crime, setting off a chain of spiralling events.

‘The Lie’ Trailer: Joey King’s Parents Cover Up a Murder in Amazon Drama-Thriller | Screen Realm

The official trailer:

Not familiar with the film this is based on, but it has a worthy premise. What do you think? Any interest in watching?

The Lie will be available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video on October 6, 2020.

Netflix: September 16

Weekend #38 of 53 (9/18 – 9/20/2020) for 2020 Picks By Streaming Service

Once again this week, Netflix with their massive back stock of movies and TV shows already produced pre-pandemic is the focal point of what’s new on streaming.

Starting to make us wonder when they’re going to run out (we hope they don’t!), but it seems no other streaming channel has the ramp up and head start with originally produced content that Netflix has. Maybe in 2021 and beyond there will be more and better competition, but Netflix is at the top of the heap, somewhat easily, we are reminded week in and week out.

This week a featured movie starring Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson in The Devil All The Time and the TV series Jurassic World: Camp Crustaceous. Shudder also has an original, Spiral, that looks worth checking out.

As far as other TV, Netflix is also premiering Ratched, a series based on the popular nurse character from Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. HBO continues their weekly new movie on their platform with a good one, The Invisible Man (2020) from Blumhouse earlier this year. Although there hasn’t been a lot of competition that is currently our #1 favorite film watched in theaters in 2020.

WHAT TO WATCH THIS WEEKEND #37 of 2020 Movie and TV Streaming Picks – Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, CBS All Access, Shudder, Peacock

Netflix September 10

Weekend #37 of 53 (9/11 – 9/13/2020) for 2020 Picks By Streaming Service

Our home movie theater is still not reopened. We still have that one Regal Cinema theater 30 miles south, and that’s been our go-to option for the movie theater experience. Everything else, still remains shuttered in our area, including at least one independent theater.

This means probably a lot of moviegoers in our area are either staying with streaming for their entertainment options or also making the trek 30 miles south to the lone Regal Cinema near Olympia, Washington that’s open. It hasn’t been very busy any of the times we’ve been there, so I think a lot of people are staying home and streaming.

HBO Max: Sept 10, 2020

Still close to the first of the month, there are a bunch of good streaming movies to check out and some new movies and TV shows as well.

Shudder is doing a 61 days of Halloween countdown in 2020. They normally do 31 days, but have expanded to 61, I guess because of the Thing That Should Not be Named. They have a movie I’ve been wanting to see that was previously VOD only and it’s a Shudder exclusive, Color Out Of Space starring Nicolas Cage. We need to get our horror on because it’s that witching season!

Peacock movies rotated in September 1st and their roster of originals are included in this weekend streaming post as well.

Next week or the week after, we’ll try to check out some of the free streaming channels (Roku, Tubi, IMDB, etc). There are way too many streaming choices available out there right now to choose from and keeping up with the ones we pay for is challenging.

Chances are really good if you want to see a movie released in the last 20 years, it’s available to stream somewhere. We like using the FREE services: Reelgood.com and JustWatch.com to see what movies are playing where. If you’re reading this post past the dates indicated in the title, then you might need to check those services to see where the movies and TV shows have moved onto.
