Brutal reminder we’re all aging – Macaulay Culkin turns 40, Sean Connery 90

The Rock ⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Mortality sucks. Immortality can have its drawbacks, too (The Bicentenniel Man, anyone?). Can we just have somewhere in between? Maybe we live 150-250 years instead of 77 or so?

The SSA Actuarial Life Table shows I’ve statistically got like 30 years left on this earth. How are you doing? I know, I know, who wants to pay attention to this stuff? It’s important to remember this to keep your perspective about using the time we have — however limited — not sweating the small stuff.

This past week, we’ve seen articles covering the first and best James Bond, Sean Connery, turning 90 and now Home Alone Macaulay Culkin turning 40.

Culkin was 10 years old when his hit film “Home Alone” was released, and the public has never really stopped seeing him as his Kevin McCallister character.

I’m not comparing the acting chops of the two because that would be ridiculous. Culkin was inarguably a one trick pony child actor, while Connery was in a bunch of classic films. Besides Bond, he was Indiana Jones dad, just to name one. And then there were a string of not amazing, but good films like Presidio with a young Meg Ryan, opposite Wesley Snipes in Michael Crichton’s Rising Sun and the criminal broke out of prison to help break into Alcatraz and face Nicolas Cage overacting in Michael Bay’s Picasso (no, not Transformers!) The Rock,

Both these actors off screen have had personal issues, just to be clear about the off camera stuff, simply talking about them getting older here being a reminder of what’s happening to all of us.

This morning on the way to work, Kara and I were talking about how your muscles don’t bounce back like they did before once you reach your 50s. Aches, pains, they linger. You have numbness in your hands and it takes days instead of hours. In your 40s it’s hours and when you’re in your 20s and 30s you bounce back in minutes. Enjoy your youth, because, physically at least, your body slows down.

Happy birthday to Sean Connery and Macauley Culkin. One of them stands a good chance to be remembered 100 years from now for his work (at least as Bond), I’m not sure the other anybody will know. Home Alone was a fun movie, the sequels not so much, but I don’t think it has much in the way of lasting power. No offense to Culkin, but he’s got another 45-50+ years to do something even more noteworthy. Plenty of time.

What do you think? Will they still be watching James Bond 100 years from now? Will there be a new Bond that takes over the #1 slot from Connery? Will there be a female Bond?
