“I’ve never really viewed myself as particularly talented,” the then 39-year-old actor said to “60 Minutes” in a 2007 profile. “I’ve viewed myself as slightly above average in talent. And where I excel is ridiculous, sickening, work ethic. You know, while the other guy’s sleeping? I’m working. While the other guy’s eating? I’m working.”Will Smith’s 10 Best Movies Ranked | IndieWire
We all have actors and actresses we look forward to watching and others that too often disappoint. Will Smith is in the latter category for me. I’d add more to the list (and this is just a few examples): Nicolas Cage (enough overacting, please!), Melissa McCarthy (overrated and unfunny), Tiffany Haddish (brash and annoying),
But let’s focus on Will Smith who is currently starring in Gemini Man ⭐️⭐️ an Ang Lee technical marvel, but ultimately forgettable film. The script and story are a mess, but what might be worse is having more than one Will Smith in a movie. Ang Lee could have doubled up somebody like Harrison Ford (yeah, too old probably), but no, we get Will fricking Smith.
Will Smith clearly has a good work ethic and what frustrates me most about him is he is one of those actors that I want to like but frequently don’t. His work sometimes makes me smile or entertains, but mostly frustrates. It seems like he’s forever chasing his best days on TV as The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.
Don’t get me wrong, Will Smith has been in some good movies.
Yes, he was OK in Men In Black, but my favorite actor in that film was the great Tommy Lee Jones. Now there”s a solid actor. Sure, Jones might seem one dimensional to some (that cranky, cathartic role), but his one dimension is perfected vs, Smith who tries (seemingly too hard) to crack out of his comic shell and be dramatic — and fall flat 9 times out of 10.
Indiewire shares their top 10 Will Smith movies in the link where Smith is quoted at the top of this post and I sort of agree with their list.
This post might sound like I have it in for Will Smith, that I dislike him. I really don’t, I’m frustrated because I keep rooting for films he is in and they come up short too often. He needs to be in a film that he shines in.
The movies I’ve liked that he’s in tend to be in spite of him, rather than because of him. This is going to seem like a huge personal diss to Will Smith, but it’s not, I’m saying I badly want to like his acting in …. something. Ali is probably his highlight for movies I’ve seen him in, and that was 2001.
Hancock? No. I, Robot? Terrible. After Earth? No way. All Men in Black sequels? Please. Hitch? Argh. His animated voice acting work? Yes, enjoyed that.
My most favorite movies that Will Smith starred in were 15-20+ years ago (Ali, Men In Black, Bad Boys, Independence Day)
What directors and writers can cast Will Smith into something that makes his talent shine? Gemini Man isn’t the vehicle.
Maybe teaming up with Martin Lawrence again in Bad Boys For Life, due to hit theaters in 2020 will work? I hope so. I like people like Smith who have a great work ethic, but he needs to be better than his own assessment of his talent.
What Will Smith movies do you like his acting in? What have I missed? Admittedly, I haven’t seen every Will Smith movie, so maybe there is a diamond in the rough. Somewhere .. over the rainbow?
